Quantitative ultrasound measurements of stiffness index in young adult females
نویسنده
چکیده
Background: The aim of the study was to investigate the use of quantitative ultrasound (QUS) in the young (20-25years) Saudi females to obtain stiffness index values related to bone quality. Method & Findings: In 101 young females recruited, QUS measurements were performed in the calcaneus region. 33% and 3% had osteopenia and osteoporosis in the calcaneus respectively, stiffness index values = 81.52 and 54.33 respectively. Of the 101 subjects, 65 young females did not suffer from osteopenia in that region with a mean stiffness index = 100.95. A strong association between Stiffness index with weight was found but not with height. Conclusions: We found that more than a third of the young Saudi females sampled suffered from osteopenia in the calcaneus region; body weight had a positive relationship with stiffness index.

Measurements of bone mineral density and stiffness index in young Saudi females.
OBJECTIVE To examine the ability to use Quantitative Ultrasonography (QUS) densitometer for screening of osteoporosis and osteopenia by comparing QUS values obtained at the calcaneus region to bone mineral density (BMD) values measured at the spine and the neck of the femur using Dual Energy X-ray Absorbemetry (DXA). METHODS QUS (in the calcaneus region) and DXA (the spine and the neck of fem...
متن کاملTransforming growth factor beta-1 (TGFB1) and peak bone mass: association between intragenic polymorphisms and quantitative ultrasound of the heel
BACKGROUND Variance of peak bone mass has a substantial genetic component, as has been shown with twin studies examining quantitative measures such as bone mineral density (BMD) and quantitative ultrasound (QUS). Evidence implicating single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) of the transforming growth factor beta-1 (TGFB1) gene is steadily accumulating. However, a comprehensive look at multiple SN...

BACKGROUND Decreased arterial elasticity is a risk factor for several cardiovascular outcomes. Longitudinal data on the effect of physical activity in youth on adult arterial elasticity are limited. The aim of this study was to determine the long-term effects of physical activity in children and young adults on carotid artery elasticity after 21 years of follow-up. METHODS AND RESULTS Partici...
